The Ward Centre of Richmond, affiliated with the International Centre for Ward Method Studies in Washington, DC, specializes in the Ward Method of music education. The Ward Method is a comprehensive general/choral music education method that teaches proper vocal technique/placement, intonation, rhythm, sight singing, music theory, music history, composition, improvisation, and conducting. This method was founded by Justine Bayard Ward (1879-1975) for the purpose of teaching American children the extensive music literature of the Roman Catholic Church, especially Gregorian Chant. In addition to chant, the music literature comprised in the method includes works by the great composers of Western history, folk selections, international selections, and newly composed pieces. Performances will be held throughout the year at various Richmond area Catholic churches and other venues.
